Was ist der Notendurchschnitt ?
Calculating the grade point average is one of the most important indicators in the school system and far beyond. It indicates how good or poor academic performance is on average – be it for a school subject, a mid-year report card, the Abitur (high school diploma), or a university application.
Wie berechnet man den Notendurchschnitt?
Don’t panic – it’s easier than you think.
The basic formula is:
Grade average = sum of all grades ÷ number of grades
Want an example?
You have the following grades:
German: 2
Math: 3
English: 2
Biology: 4
Calculation power:
2 + 3 + 2 + 4 = 11
11 ÷ 4 = 2.75
Done. It’s that simple.
Some schools round, some don’t – it depends on the state or the type of school.
When not all subjects count equally – the weighted average.
In high school or university, things get a little more specific. Some subjects count more because they are core or advanced subjects, for example. This is called the weighted grade point average.
Instead, so-called “factors” are used.
A small example:
Mathematics (factor 2): Grade 2 → 2 × 2 = 4
English (factor 1): grade 3 → 3 × 1 = 3
History (factor 1): Grade 2 → 2 × 1 = 2
Then it looks like this:
Sum of weighted grades: 4 + 3 + 2 = 9
Sum of factors: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4
Grade point average: 9 ÷ 4 = 2.25
